Bean Day

Superstitions abound in Japan. One expression of this superstition comes during Setsubun. This is a day where people throw soybeans to scare away the devil. This photo was taken at one bean throwing event at a temple. Hordes of people pack around a makeshift platform in an attempt to catch packets of beans. Any thing will do to catch the beans, bags, hats, whatever.
